Data Warehousing with SQL Server 2008 (David Lean)
Author: Jeff Wharton Date Posted: 24/03/2008 2:47:53 PM
The 4 main pillars driving the development of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 were:-
  • Enterprise Data Platform (ie: Secure + Highly Scalable, Available, Reliable & Manageable)

  • Beyond Relational (ie: Spatial, XML, Text, Movies & Pictures, Variable Length Records & sparse data)

  • Pervasive Insight (ie: Improved Analytics, Data Mining, ETL & Reporting)

  • Dynamic Development (ie: Distributed &/or Mobile Apps, Improved integration with Development Best Practices, Incorporate .NET productivity  enhancements, LINQ, .NET Sync Framework, ADO.NET Entity Framework, etc)
Running over the top of all that was a few major use scenarios, eg: Data Warehousing.

This month’s session will look at the large number of new features that make your Data Warehouse; easier to create, more scalable & cheaper to Run.  David will show you how features like; page level compression & transparent database encryption really work & how they work together. We will look at new commands like: Merge and examine the performance improvements on features like partitioned tables & star join query optimisation.
