Server consolidation and Virtualisation are key industry trends which all IT departments should be following and evaluating. This presentation will provide an overview of server consolidation techniques for SQL Server with a special focus on virtualisation and Hyper-V.

We will explore the Hyper-V general architecture, high availability features, and best practices. We will also present virtualised SQL Server performance results on different CPU architectures and explain how modern architectures boost virtualisation performance and provide multi-VM scalability.

Rob Reinauer
============
Rob is the Product Unit Manager for the SQL Base Infrastructure & Availability (SBIA) group in the Database Systems Group. SBIA owns the SQL Server Engine base execution environment, Security and Replication components, as well as the SQL Division’s Deployment & Servicing Platform and High Availability missions. Before joining Microsoft, Rob was CTO for Pervasive Software in Austin, TX a mid-market database vendor. Before Pervasive, Rob held a variety of leadership roles within the IBM Corporation, including Chief Architect for IBM’s PSP division and OS/2, as well as Senior Architect for the RS/6000 division. Previous to IBM Rob held leadership roles at Performance Architectures, Tandem and Sperry Rand.

Mark Souza
==========
Mark Souza is a Director in the Microsoft SQL Server development organization. He heads up all customer and ISV programs for the Microsoft SQL Server unit. These teams specialize in implementing the most challenging customer database applications worldwide. His experience focuses on the issues related to the distribution, modeling, design, and performance of data with a distributed computing application. Mr. Souza uses this customer experience to drive high quality SQL Server product planning back in Redmond. Mr. Souza's twenty seven years in the Information Technology business has consisted of database administration, end-user tool management, systems engineering database specialist/lead, client/server architect, Microsoft regional data technology specialist and SQL Server development customer advisory team.
Mr. Souza has a Masters Degree in MIS from Marist College and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from SUNY Potsdam. He enjoys spending quality time with his wife Lisa of 24 years and three beautiful children (Andrew 16, Megan 14 and Jennifer 12). He also enjoys flying airplanes, reading, running, sports and attending broadway shows in his spare time.
