Data Mining Presentation
Author: Steve Lloyd Date Posted: 10/4/2005 6:19:01 PM
As many of you know, the data mining tools in SQL Server 2005 are very accessible and easy to use. The big challenge lies in understanding what goes on under the hood.

This month, Dr Rohan Baxter will be analysing some of this underlying complexity, so that we may be able to bring up topics such as “Neural Networks” or “Sequence Clustering” at cocktail parties with confidence!

Along the way, reference will be made to the functionality and power of Microsoft’s Analysis Services (for example, the previously mentioned Neural Networks and Sequence Clustering available in the 2005 release), but more emphasis will be placed on the concepts involved in data mining, and the value it can add to your workplace.

I look forward to seeing you there.

About the presenter:

Prior to joining the ATO, Rohan was a R&D group leader at CSIRO. From 1997-2000, Rohan was Vice-President R&D in Ultimode Inc., a San Francisco Bay Area data mining start-up. He provided R&D consulting services to NASA, the National Science Foundation, and ecommerce retailers such as SharperImage Inc. Rohan graduated with a PhD in Computer Science/Machine Learning from Monash University in 1996.

Rohan’s Phd work was on clustering and regression methods. He received a NASA Commercialization Award and NSF grant to apply the results to Autoclass, a well known model-based clustering program. Parts of the resulting program are deployed on the Mars Rovers for remote rock analysis.

At NASA, Rohan also used Gaussian processes (neural network equivalent) and MARS, a well known semi-parametric splines regression method, in a number of non-linear regression applications. In commercial consultancies at Ultimode and CSIRO, Rohan has used a wide variety of clustering and predictive modelling methods adapted for the particular business contexts.
