DBA: SQL Server Virtualization: How? Why? When? What?
Author: Victor Isakov Date Posted: 29/04/2011 4:00:47 AM
Virtualizing and/or consolidating SQL Server has been a "hot" topic over the last 18 months. Many organisations are going through the process of virtualizing their SQL Server instances. Lot's of SQL Server "experts" are espousing the benefits of virtualization and what they have "implemented" in the field. Yet there still seems to be some confusion in the boardrooms (and water coolers) about virtualizing SQL Server. Should we use Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware? Will performance be better or worse? Should we implement a failover cluster in a virtual environment? Is SQL Server supported on VMware? The virtualization landscape can become very confusing, very quickly!

In this session Victor Isakov (MCA, MCM, MCT, MVP) will answers the more important questions that both management and IT professionals need to know.

Victor will cover HOW different virtualization technologies work, their pros and cons. He will then discuss WHY you would consider virtualization, WHEN you would virtualise and WHAT expectations should be set of all stakeholders. Finally Victor will give some best practices and recommendations with virtualizing SQL Server, with specific examples of design and implementation on different virtualization stacks.
