[DBA] Avoiding Ruin: High-Availability (and Disaster Recovery)
Author: Victor Isakov Date Posted: 6/2/2014 12:05:16 AM
What will you do if your 1TB+ database solution crashes now? I hope you have the latest backup set... But have you ever tested your restore strategy? Have you measured how long it will take? How much data will you lose? How long can your business survive without your core line-of-business database? How much money will you loose per hour? Will your business survive a substantial outage?

It's amazing how many organisations have not thought about these sorts of considerations. Or made assumptions about the availability and recoverability of their database solution. Only to find out the hard way.

Implementing a high-availability solution in SQL Server is critical in our 24x7 world where users are accessing your database solutions continuously.

Likewise it is important to have a disaster recovery and business continuity plan in place.

In this session Victor Isakov (MCA, MCM, MCT, MVP) will cover the different high-availability technologies available in SQL Server. He will discuss how these technologies work, demonstrate them in action and discuss their relative pros / cons. Although Victor will focus on failover clustering and Availability Groups, he will also cover Database Mirroring, Log Shipping and Replication. With over 20+ years of architecting and implementing high-availability solutions Victor will provide plenty of practical advice, case studies and real-world examples.

Finally Victor will discuss disaster recovery, business continuity and how it slots into high-availability.

This should prove to be a very practical session that can help you achieve the number of nines that your business is after.
